How to Flush Your Water Heater
You can do this yourself with a few basic tools: a garden hose, a bucket, and an adjustable wrench.
- 1Turn off the water heater. For electric units, switch off the breaker. For gas, set the thermostat to “pilot.”
- 2Shut off the cold water supply valve at the top of the heater.
- 3Connect the garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom; run the other end to a bucket or floor drain.
- 4Open the drain valve carefully — the water may be very hot.
- 5Flush the tank: once empty, briefly turn the cold supply back on to stir up remaining sediment, and let it run until clear.
- 6Close the drain valve and remove the hose.
- 7Refill the tank, then open a hot water faucet indoors to release trapped air.
- 8Turn the water heater back on — restore power or reset the gas thermostat.
