Clay tile laterals and eighty years of tree growth
Much of High Point’s older housing was plumbed with clay tile or cast iron sewer laterals, and in the neighborhoods off Johnson Street and around Uptowne a good many of those original lines are still in the ground. Clay tile joins every few feet, and every one of those joints is an invitation to a root.
The oaks and maples that make these streets pleasant are the same trees now working into those joints. Roots do not break sound pipe, but they find existing cracks and open them wider each season. That is the single most common cause of main-line failure we deal with in this city.
What we find in High Point drain lines
Root intrusion in clay laterals
Mature street trees and jointed clay tile are a bad combination. A camera shows exactly where the roots are entering, which decides whether cutting is enough or the section needs replacing.
Cast iron scaled shut
Cast iron drains from the 1940s and 50s build interior scale until the effective diameter is a fraction of the original. Cabling clears it briefly; the line is the real problem.
Kitchen grease build-up
Decades of cooking fat coat older kitchen branches. It is a straightforward clear, but recurring blockages in the same line usually mean the pipe needs more than cabling.
Bellied lines from settling
Ground movement over eighty years leaves low spots that hold waste. They clog repeatedly no matter how often they are cleared, and a camera is the only way to confirm it.
Where we work in High Point
Our shop has been in High Point since 1947, which means the fastest response we can offer — and sewage backing up is not something to wait on.
How a drain call goes
First priority is getting your drains working again so the household can function normally.
Where it matters we run a camera, so you can see the pipe rather than take our word for it.
If the pipe is sound, we are finished. If it is cracked or root-invaded, you get a plan and a price.
We protect the area, clean thoroughly, and tell you how to keep the line clear.
Drain clearing is quoted before we start. Camera inspection is priced separately and we will tell you honestly whether your situation calls for it. Any line repair comes as a written quote with financing available, never as pressure while your bathroom is out of action.
High Point drain questions
Why does my drain keep clogging after it has been cleared?
Because the clog was a symptom. In High Point it is most often roots in a clay lateral, heavy scale in cast iron, or a low spot from settling. A camera inspection finds which, so you stop paying to clear the same line.
Several fixtures are slow at once. Is that serious?
More serious than one slow sink, yes. When tubs, toilets and sinks all drain poorly together, the problem is usually the main line rather than an individual trap, and that needs attention before it becomes a backup.
Will you have to dig up my yard?
Not always, and never before we know exactly where and what the problem is. We locate the fault first, then discuss the least invasive repair that will actually last.
Are chemical drain cleaners worth trying first?
For an occasional slow sink, maybe. For a real blockage, no. They rarely clear it, they can damage older cast iron and clay, and they make the line hazardous for whoever opens it next.
How fast can you get here for a sewage backup?
We are based in High Point, so quickly. Sewage entering a home is an emergency and we answer those calls around the clock.
