What hillsides do to sewer lines
Winston-Salem is the hilliest city we serve, and terrain shapes its drainage problems. Steep lots produce laterals with aggressive fall, which sounds ideal but tends to let water outrun solids, leaving deposits partway down. Meanwhile houses set below street level need longer runs to reach the main, sometimes with pumped sections.
Add the age of the housing — Ardmore, the West End and the streets around Old Salem contain some of the oldest continuously used sewer laterals in the region — and you get lines that are both old and geometrically awkward. Camera inspection is worth more here than almost anywhere, because guessing at what a sloped, century-old line is doing rarely works.
