Winston-Salem boiler, plumbing and HVAC service

Winston-Salem has more radiator heat still in daily use than anywhere else we work. Finding someone who will service a boiler rather than condemn it is the hard part — that is a large slice of what we do here.

Why so many Winston-Salem homes still run on radiators

The tobacco-era prosperity that built Ardmore, Buena Vista, the West End and the streets around Reynolda produced substantial houses at a time when hot-water and steam heat was simply how you heated a home. A great many of those systems are still installed, and a surprising number still work well, because cast iron is close to indestructible when the controls and circulation are maintained.

What fails is rarely the boiler body. It is the circulator, the expansion tank, the zone valve, the aquastat, or air that has worked its way into the loop. Owners are often told the whole system needs to come out. Sometimes that is true. Frequently it is a part and an afternoon, and we will show you the difference before you spend anything.

The plumbing side follows the same age curve: galvanized supply, cast-iron waste, and original fixtures that need parts nobody stocks any more. We also see a lot of retrofit work where central air was added to a house that never had ductwork, which brings its own condensate and airflow problems in our humidity.

What Winston-Salem calls look like

Older, heavier houses generate a distinct mix of work:

Boiler and radiator systems

Cold radiators, knocking pipes, failed circulators and zone valves. Serviced, not automatically replaced.

Heating & Boilers →
Retrofit AC problems

Central air added to a house that never had ducts — condensate overflow, weak airflow and humidity that never drops.

Air Conditioning →
Aging supply piping

Galvanized lines that have narrowed with corrosion, giving poor pressure and rust-tinged hot water.

Winston-Salem questions

Will you service a boiler, or only replace it?

We service them. Buchanan has worked on boilers and cast-iron radiators for decades, and in Winston-Salem it is a routine part of the week rather than an exception. Replacement is a recommendation we make when the evidence supports it, not a default.

My radiators bang loudly when the heat comes on. Is that dangerous?

It is usually air in the loop or a circulation issue, not an immediate hazard, but it should not be ignored because it can indicate water where it should not be. It is normally a straightforward fix once we identify which of those it is.

Do you add air conditioning to older homes without ductwork?

Yes, and we are candid about the options. Depending on the house, that may mean a compact duct system or ductless units. We will explain what each would mean for your rooms and your walls before you commit.
