Mill-town housing stock

Small houses, long service lives, and plumbing that has been patched before

The Chair City built a great deal of compact, well-made housing for furniture workers, and much of it is still occupied and still on its original bones. That means narrow crawl spaces, supply lines that have been repaired in sections by different hands over sixty years, and drain runs that were never generous to begin with.

The most common thing we find is a house where three previous repairs have each solved one symptom without addressing the cause — a stretch of galvanized replaced here, a coupling added there, and pressure that is still poor because the rest of the run is corroded. We would rather show you the whole picture and let you decide how far to go, than sell you a fourth patch.

Heating here is mostly gas furnaces and heat pumps rather than boilers, and a fair number are past twenty years. With older equipment we check combustion and venting first, because on a furnace that age safety matters more than efficiency.

Thomasville questions

My pressure is still bad after a plumber replaced a section of pipe. Why?

Because corroded galvanized narrows along its whole length, not at one point. Replacing ten feet of a forty-foot run improves very little. We measure pressure at several points to find how much of the system is actually restricting flow before recommending anything.

Is it worth repairing an old furnace or should I replace it?

If the heat exchanger is sound and the fault is a control, igniter or blower, repair is usually good value. If the exchanger is compromised, replacement is the only safe answer and we will say so plainly.
